UPDATE #8 - TUESDAY APRIL 14, 2020 5:45 PM

This afternoon, Governor Tate Reeves announced that Mississippi's public school buildings will remain closed through the end of this semester, though he emphasized that learning will continue.

Governor Reeves acknowledged the amazing work of teachers, school leaders, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, and other staff - as well as parents - to ensure that children avoid falling too far behind. It is important that students keep practicing the skills they learned before the COVID-19 outbreak and, to every extent possible, that they continue to make academic progress. Our staff are working hard to ensure that students have the resources they need to be prepared to be successful.

We are geared up for the feeding program to begin Monday, April 20th. At this time, the feeding program will follow the same schedule as we did before the shelter-in-place began. Another set of learning packets will be ready to go out soon. Please be looking for a message from your school with details by the end of the week.

Update #7 - April 1, 2020 4:30 PM

Governor Reeves has issued a “Shelter-in-Place” order for the State of Mississippi beginning on Friday, April 3rd extending through April 20th. The goal is to slow the spread of COVID-19. The order calls for individuals to stay home except for limited allowances such as retrieving needed supplies and medical care.

With the safety of our staff in mind, the Alcorn School District Feeding Program will be suspended during this period.

All school buildings will be closed during this time. All ASD staff will be available through email. Teachers will continue to work from home and be available to students and parents through School Status or email. Learning opportunities have been communicated through various means during the closure. This will continue for the duration of the “Shelter-in-Place” order.

UPDATE #6 - WEDNESDAY MARCH 25, 2020 12:00PM

The student must be present to receive the meal per the Mississippi Department of Education.

UPDATE #5 - TUESDAY MARCH 24, 2020 4:00 PM

As we continue to deal with the situation created by the COVID-19 virus outbreak, Governor Tate Reeves has closed schools through April 17th. Additionally, we have been asked to create a Distance Learning Plan to insure students continue learning.

Administrators from all eight schools, the Career Center and the District Office have been working alongside Superintendent Bill Brand to create a Distance Learning Plan we believe balances student and staff needs for safety, student learning and teacher instruction.

The ASD Distance Learning Plan includes but is not limited to the following:

Mix of online, internet-based instruction and paper, teacher-prepared packets provided and made available to students and parents weekly.

  • Mix of delivery methods and parent pick up times at schools
  • Face-to-face interaction with teacher: Zoom, Google Meet, Skype, etc.
  • Making devices available for students who have need to check out and use at home
  • Empowering, providing and educating parents to resources for home instruction
  • Continued provision and growth of meal delivery for students
  • Continued support and preparation to meet the needs of families and students
