ACHS Welcomes Matthew Young

The Golden Bear family is proud to announce that Matthew Young has accepted the position of Assistant Principal of ACHS. Young is a native of Pontotoc, MS. He is coming to Alcorn Central with several years of classroom experience and a desire to make a difference. He is also bringing his wife Breann and two kids, Annalee and Joshua, to join the Golden Bear family.

Young is a 2007 graduate of Pontotoc High School. After graduation, he attended Mississippi State University where he earned his Bachelors of Science in Secondary Mathematics Education. Then, he began his career as an educator with the Tupelo Public School District teaching various high school math classes.

While beginning his career in the classroom, Young continued his education. In 2015, he acquired his Masters in Educational Technology from Belhaven University. Subsequently, he finished his Education Specialist in Educational Leadership from Arkansas State University in 2018.

When asked why he chose education as his profession, he answered: " I believe God led me to pursue education when I was in my first years of college. I felt a conviction to: 1) help students navigate the struggle and confusion of adolescence that I had personally experienced, 2) equip students with the real-world tools that I am passionate about (math), and 3) inspire students to discover their purpose."

He said that he is excited to join Alcorn Central High School on its mission of developing relevance, rigor, and relationships. He continued to say that he is thankful for the warm welcome he has already received and looks forward to becoming a bigger part of the Golden Bear family!

Amidst a global pandemic, Young reflected on how it has changed the scope of his position as an educator. "COVID-19 has been and is a challenging season for families and educators, as there are frequent changes and unsettling uncertainties all around. As an administrator at ACHS, I hope to be a support for families and teachers as we strive forward toward growth and success for all students."

Mr. Young said his favorite quote is from Johann Wolfgang von Geothell. He said, "If we treat people as they are, we make them worse. If we treat people as they ought to be, we help them become what they are capable of becoming."

Welcome to the Alcorn Central Mr. Young! We are excited to see the impact that you will have on our teachers, students, and community. We're glad to call you a part of the Golden Bear family!
