The Alcorn Career and Technology Center (ACTC) recently welcomed Lindley Brawner, founder of the Manners Matterprogram, to speak with students in the Business Marketing and Finance and Engineering programs. Her engaging presentation highlighted the importance of etiquette and respect in both professional and personal settings.

Brawner began Manners Matter in 2018 by inviting her preschool students from First Baptist Church Preschool—where she taught for 11 years—into her home for “Cooking with Mrs. Lindley.” While making fun treats together, she taught them hands-on lessons about everyday manners. The classes were put on hold during COVID, but a request from a family friend to work with a group of middle school girls reignited her passion for teaching etiquette, focusing on inclusion and positive social interactions. Since then, she has expanded Manners Matter to include boys’ and girls’ groups, and now works with students of all ages, including college students preparing for job interviews.

During her visit to ACTC, students explored a range of valuable skills, including dining etiquette, the art of conversation, expressing gratitude through thank-you notes, kind gestures, and even the proper way to address an envelope. These lessons equip students not only for career readiness but also for success in everyday life.

“Teaching soft skills like these is invaluable for our students,” said Skylar Mincey, instructor of the Business Marketing and Finance program. “The ability to carry themselves professionally and show respect to others will set them apart in any career path they choose.”

Engineering instructor, Alison Wade, agreed, adding, “Programs like Manners Matter give our students an edge. It’s one thing to have technical skills, but knowing how to interact politely and professionally is just as important in today’s workforce.”

Brawner shared, “I truly enjoy the aspect of teaching.  In the last year I have worked with all ages, including college students going for job interviews.  I am hoping to meet many people along the way.”
